Nina’s Story

Nina is a Berkeley native and outdoor enthusiast! She earned her B.Sc. in Environmental Science and Marketing and then received a Fulbright Scholarship to study water recycling in Israel. She went on to pursue her M.Sc. in Palestinian water recycling and returned home to the Bay Area to start practicing local water reuse.

She took her PDC at Occidental Arts and Ecology center, after which she envisioned the Backyard Permaculture Guild!
She apprenticed with Greywater Action in Oakland before becoming trained as a CA Professional Greywater Installer in 2019. She has now been teaching and installing greywater systems for 7 years. Her expertise is in Laundry-to-Landscape (L2L) systems.

When not installing greywater systems, she spends her time educating folks on where their water comes from and how to restore human relationships with the waters. She recently completed a 240 mile journey, walking from her home on Chochenyo Ohlone land all the way to the headwaters of the Mokelumne River, the river that EBMUD sources our East Bay tap water from. Now she is making the journey into an educational film to bring into Bay Area schools to teach young folks where our water comes from. Sign up here to learn more!

Nina follows the Jewish practice of tzedakah, donating 10% of her earnings from BPG to the Sogorea Te Land Trust, a women-led indigenous group working to revitalize indigenous culture in the East Bay. Permaculture techniques are often congruent with indigenous knowledge that has been passed down for generations. Nina is so grateful to get to learn and practice such a beautiful way of tending to the land.
